How this review was made: written from my own video review of this product. Every opinion here is my own, from using it myself.

Quick Verdict

All my kids do is steal my cell phone, and this toy phone ended that. Two to three hours from a dead battery, 31 preloaded games, no internet, and a school mode that locks it out during class hours. My eight-year-old absolutely loves it.

They Stole My Phone, So I Gave Them This One

My eight-year-old had figured out how to unlock my phone faster than I could stop her. That’s the whole problem this KOKODI kids smart phone solves. Even though it’s a toy phone, it makes them feel like they have the independence of their own phone, and that feeling is doing most of the work here.

Everything on it is touchscreen, so it’s just like a regular smartphone to them. Long hold the button on the side and it says welcome. Single press the home screen and you’re into the apps. My girls like to just throw it in their purse and walk around with their own cell phone. That’s it. That’s the win.

You Can’t Hand It Over Right Away

Charge time: two to three hours from dead, plan ahead for birthday or holiday mornings. If this is a birthday gift and the kid opens it at the party, nobody’s playing with it for a couple hours. Charge it the night before. Same goes for Christmas morning.

The other thing worth knowing up front: no internet, no calls, no texts. That’s a feature for me as a parent and a letdown for the kid who thinks they’re getting a real phone. Set the expectation before they unwrap it.

School Mode Is the Feature I Keep Telling Parents About

School mode is the one feature no other kids’ toy phone I’ve seen bothers to include. Set the hours, and if they sneak it into their backpack, it’s a brick until the final bell, no negotiation required. That alone is why I keep recommending this one by name.

The 31 preinstalled games run across three difficulty modes, easy, normal, and hard, so a three-year-old and a nine-year-old aren’t hitting the same ceiling. There’s a front camera and a back camera for selfies, voiceovers, and a flashlight they will absolutely use at bedtime whether you want them to or not. No internet means no rabbit holes. Nothing gets added to this phone that you didn’t put there.

My eight-year-old loves it, I expected this to top out around age five or six, but she’s been shooting videos with the back camera and working through the harder game modes for weeks. The age range earns the “up to 10” claim.

What the Money Buys You

You’re buying a camera, a game console and a calm car ride in one small package. Right now it’s sitting a little below where it’s been priced over the past three months, and it’s selling better lately than it normally does, ranking around #2,574 in Toys & Games against a 90 day average closer to #3,109. More than 900 people bought one in the past month. For a gift item, that’s the window you want to be in. Check the current price here.

The premium silicone case is part of that value. It wraps the whole phone and the buttons and ports still work through it. Kids drop things. This one is built for that.

Unboxing It Takes Two Minutes

Inside the box you get the phone and its case, a USB to USB-C charging cord, and a lanyard. That’s the whole kit. The case has a really cute raised design on the back, and it comes off as well, so if they don’t want the cover on it, they don’t have to.

The lanyard is the part I’d use. It goes around their neck so it’s not as easily lost, which matters a lot if you’re handing this to a kid at a restaurant or on a plane.

Pick the Color Before You Add to Cart

Two colors, and they’re not the same design. Nebula pink and deep blue, each with its own texture, with a raised dinosaur or unicorn on the back and little stars hidden in it. Worth a look before you order, because the design is half the appeal for a kid this age. It works just as well as a kids smart phone for girls or for boys, the hardware is identical.

Pros

  • School mode locks the phone out during class hours
  • 31 preinstalled games with easy, normal and hard modes
  • Front and back cameras plus voiceovers and a flashlight
  • Full touchscreen that feels like a real phone to them
  • Comes with a lanyard and a removable silicone case

Cons

  • Two to three hours to charge from dead, so it isn’t gift-ready out of the box
  • No calls, texts or internet, which disappoints older kids expecting a real phone
  • 2.8-inch screen is small if a child needs larger text

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it need an app, account or subscription?

No. Everything is preloaded and it powers on ready to play with no account and no monthly fee. There’s no internet connection at all, so there’s nothing to sign into.

Can I get photos off it onto my computer?

Yes, it uses a standard USB to USB-C cord, the same one that charges it, and the ports stay accessible through the silicone case. Plug it into a computer the way you would any camera.

Will a 3-year-old be able to use it?

Yes, it’s rated for ages 3 to 10. The games have an easy mode for the youngest kids, and the camera locks on to people and pets automatically so a toddler doesn’t have to aim carefully.

Can it survive travel and drops?

The premium silicone case covers it all around specifically to handle accidental drops. Pair that with the lanyard and it’s a reasonable plane or road trip toy.

Gift Travel Kids
School mode is what moved this from a decent toy to one I recommend by name. Half a point goes for the two to three hour charge that stops it being gift-ready out of the box. If your kid is expecting a phone that calls people, this isn’t it, and a preloaded battery would close the gap.
