What is Skills2Care®

Developed at Thomas Jefferson University, Skills2Care® is an evidence-based, in-home program. By fortifying your wellbeing and honing your skills, you slow your loved one’s loss of daily functioning as they succumb to their dementia, decreasing your dementia patient’s challenging behaviors, which could trigger you to place them in a nursing home.

The Skills2Care® program is based on 20 years of research published in the September 2010 issue of JAMA (the Journal of the American Medical Association), titled: “A Biobehavioral Home-Based Intervention and Well-being of Patients with Dementia and Their Caregivers.” The study demonstrated that outcomes from specific Biobehavioral interventions “compared favorably with pharmacological trials, yet no adverse side effects.” In other words, caring for your loved one is as beneficial in slowing their decline as are prescriptions, but without the bad side effects.

A core disease feature of dementia is functional decline, indicating a risk factor for a poor quality of life, increased healthcare costs, institutionalization, and mortality.

As the disease progresses, families like yours provide increasing hands-on physical assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) often resulting in your elevated distress; a risk factor for deciding to place your loved one in a nursing home.

JD The OT develops and implements Skills2Care® strategies tailored specifically for your unique needs and environments, teaching your family caregivers how to grapple with the day-to-day challenges of your dementia patient while remaining upbeat, positive, and calm.

As we mentioned above, Skills2Care is an evidence-based program designed to teach you, the caregiver, dementia patient techniques to better care for yourself and your family members, such as the skills needed to handle resisting help, wandering, and other dementia-related behaviors.
