The Metal Squirrel Baffle 17“ is worth buying if squirrels are emptying your feeder and your post is already set in the ground. It splits into four steel sides that screw around a round or square post in place, no digging required. Buy it if your feeder sits 8 to 10 feet from the nearest tree.

How this review was made: written from my own video review of this product. Every opinion here is my own, from using it myself.

Quick Verdict

Four wide steel sides, a handful of screws, and you don’t have to pull the wooden post out of the ground. It’s a slick surface so they’ll slide right off. Kind of a no-brainer if squirrels are clearing your feeder in a day.

Buy if you:

  • already have a wooden post set in concrete and don’t want to dig it up
  • are losing a whole batch of bird feed in a day to squirrels
  • have a round OR square post between 2.5 and 4.5 inches
  • want steel instead of replacing plastic guards every season

Bird Feed Isn’t Cheap, and a Squirrel Can Clear a Batch in a Day

One squirrel clears a full bag of feed in 24 hours, which is why the math sold me on this before I opened the box. You buy a bag of feed, you fill the feeder, and one squirrel works through the whole batch in a day. So you’re not buying a squirrel baffle for trees and posts to protect the birds. You’re buying it to stop refilling a feeder every 48 hours. The company sent me the Metal Squirrel Baffle 17“ on Amazon to test out for this video, and pulling it out, it looks like a solid set. The pieces are wide. They’re big.

The 8-Foot Height Is a Ladder Job

This needs to be 8 feet above the ground, a ladder job that most box copy glosses over. That’s not a reach-up-and-screw-it install, that’s a ladder and somebody holding it. The install itself is simple, screws and everything comes with it, but you’re doing simple work at an awkward height. Budget for that before you order. The baffle sitting at chest height does nothing.

Four Sides, All the Screws, and the Post Stays Where It Is

It wraps around an existing post without removal because four separate steel sides screw together instead of sliding over the top. Because it’s four separate pieces instead of one solid disc with a hole, it clamps around whatever’s already standing, round or square post, 2.5 to 4.5 inches, without touching the ground. Everything you need, including all the screws, is in the box.

That’s the difference between a 15-minute job and a weekend of digging out concrete. Most baffles make you slide them down over the top, which means the post comes out or the feeder comes off.

The surface is the second half of it. It’s a slick, frosted steel finish, so they’ll slide right off. There’s nothing for claws to bite into, and the 17-inch edge is wide enough that a squirrel can’t reach around it. This is going to prevent them from being able to climb up it as well. If this was a wooden stake, this would go right underneath so they couldn’t get on there. The serrated outer edge is doing some of that work too, and the steel means you’re not replacing a cracked plastic guard after a winter.

Spec sheet says it fits posts from 2.5 to 4.5 inches on a side. Measure yours. That range covers most standard 4x4s and feeder poles, but it’s a hard limit, not a suggestion.

Squirrels Jump. Placement Beats Hardware.

Squirrels can clear a horizontal gap of 8 to 10 feet from a branch, which means the baffle is irrelevant if your pole is too close to a tree. This is the step most people skip, and it’s the reason a perfectly installed baffle still fails. The baffle stops the climb. It does nothing about the leap. If your feeder is 4 feet off a low branch, a squirrel lands on top of it and the hardware never enters the equation. Move the pole first, then install the baffle under the feeder.

On the Post, It’s a Wide Flat Wall

Assembled, the four sides make one wide 17-inch platform with nothing a squirrel can grab. Assembled, the four sides make one wide 17-inch platform with nothing a squirrel can grab. Position it 8 feet up, keep the feeder 8 to 10 feet from the nearest tree, and the climb is over. Check today’s price on Amazon.

It’s Not a Tree-Trunk Solution

People search for a squirrel baffle for trees and picture it wrapped around an oak. This isn’t that. The fit range tops out at 4.5 inches, which is pole and post territory, not trunk territory. You can screw it to a tree if the tree is a thin stake-sized one, but the real use is a feeder pole or a wooden post. The other thing buyers get wrong is expecting it to work at any height. Eight feet or it’s decoration.

Who This Squirrel Guard Stopper Fits

Backyard feeder owners with a post already in the ground. That’s the person this was built for. If you’ve been avoiding a baffle because every one you looked at required pulling the pole, this solves exactly that. If you’re on a thick trunk, a high branch overhanging the feeder, or you can’t get a ladder out there, it’s the wrong buy. For everyone else with a post already in the ground and 8 feet of clearance from the nearest tree, it stops the climb. If that’s your yard, I’d say take a look at it on Amazon and see where the price sits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work on raccoons too?

The listing says yes, the serrated edge design is meant to stop raccoons as well as squirrels. I only looked at it for squirrels on camera, so treat the raccoon claim as the manufacturer’s, not mine. Same 8-foot height rule would apply.

Will it rust or fade outside?

It’s steel with a sanded coating rated for wind, rain and snow for long-term outdoor use. That’s the point of buying metal over plastic here. Plastic guards go brittle after a season or two in the cold.

How do I clean it?

Wipe it down. The frosted finish is a smooth surface, so seed dust and bird droppings come off without scrubbing. Worth doing a couple times a season since the top of the baffle catches whatever falls out of the feeder.

Can I move it to a different pole later?

Yes, since it’s four screwed-together sides rather than a sealed disc. Back the screws out, move it, reassemble on the new post. Just keep the new post inside the 2.5 to 4.5 inch range.

Loses points on the install height, not the hardware, because 8 feet up means a ladder and a second set of hands. Anyone with a thick tree trunk or a branch hanging over the feeder is buying the wrong fix. A fit range past 4.5 inches would make this a 5.
